Ten-point deduction costs Torquay 2nd XI promotion
TORQUAY 2nd XI won’t be promoted from the D Division West this season following a 10-point deduction for a last-day infraction of league rules for moving their match to a different venue.

Torquay overtook long-time leaders Ivybridge in the final round of matches thanks to a winning draw against Plymouth CS&R.

As Ivybridge lost by 33 runs in the derby clash with Plympton, Torquay went past them and it a four-point lead at the top of the table.

Only one team is promoted from the D Division West with the runners-up left to try again next year.

Torquay were understandably jubilant at first as they were runners up in 2010 and 2011.

At the time, skipper Rob Jack said: “The first time we hit top of the table was the last day.

“I feel after missing out by the narrowest of margins 3 times in a row we deserve it.”

Celebrations were cut short when Ivybridge pointed out league rules had not been followed when the game was moved from Torquay to Roborough at short notice.

The match was booked for the playing fields at Torquay Boys’ Grammar School, but the ground was not available due to work going on.

Plymouth CS&R agreed to a Torquay request to move the game to their ground at Roborough. The only problem was no one told the league.

League rules say games can be moved if there is a good reason, but three days notice has to be given.

Neither side informed league administrator Geoff Coish, who only found out about the switch the day before the game when he received a call from a Plymouth CS&R official.

Coish warned Torquay then they were in breach of league rules, adding that the match could be voided.

And once Ivybridge found out about the switch – they knew on Saturday night – a complaint and hearing was inevitable.

Said Coish: “A statement from the league will be issued shortly, but I can confirm Torquay have had 10 point deducted for breaking rule 11b concerning the re-arrangement of games.”
