Torquay unveil plans for new practice facility

TORQUAY are about to start the fund-raising process for a new £80,000 multi-purpose training facility at their Recreation Ground home

Torbay’s only Premier Division club run three weekend teams and sides at every age group in the South Devon Youth League, so decent practice facilities are a must. Above is a CAD-generated picture of the new facility.

The old concrete-based nets alongside the pavilion on the Kings Drive side of the ground are showing their age and replacing them has become a priority.

The club plans to build an ECB-accredited multi-use training facility incorporating a fully enclosed all-weather playing surface and four retractable nets allowing superior and flexible training opportunities.

Numerous fund-raising events have been organize to help cover the costs of building the new facility.

Appropriately, the first fund-raiser is a sponsored net session – a marathon 24-hour, non-stop bowl and batathon in the sports hall at Torquay Boys’ Grammar School.

“Junior players, senior players, parents and normally non-playing members will be coming along to represent the club for a few hours while raising sponsorship,” said Joe Thompson, who heads up the junior section at the club.

The indoor net is taking place from 5pm on Saturday, March 8 to 5pm the following day.

The club is asking for anyone interested in taking part or contributions to sponsorship to contact them through their website. www.torquaycricketclub.co.uk.

Other fund-raising events include a Spring Ball as well as grant aid and donations from club members.
