DEVON renew their rivalry with Cornwall at St Austell tomorrow when the Minor Counties campaign resumes. The two sides have not met in three-day action since the 2010 season when a rain-ruined game at Torquay ended in a draw.
Two years on Devon’s side is almost unrecognisable with only five survivors in the 12 going to St Austell.
Devon are the defending Minor Counties Champions and that will at a touch more spice to what is a feisty encounter at the best of times.
“As champions everyone wants a to turn you over and that goes for Cornwall more than anyone,” said Devon captain Chris Bradley.
Devon started their defence of the title they won last year with a five-wicket win over Wales in a one-innings match at Exmouth two weeks ago.
Missing from that squad named for that match are batsman Matt Wood – he has work commitments – and 12th man Andy Buzza.
Peter Bradley, the captain’s younger brother, and Paignton batsman Seb Benton both come into the reckoning.
Bradley has been picked after impressing in the Premier Division of the Devon League, topping 300 runs in the first six games of a soggy season.
At the moment Bradley is the 12 for St Austell, but it is hard to see Devon leaving him out after he has taken two days off work.
Bradley isn’t counting any chickens though and won’t believe he is in the side until the team is pinned up on the wall.
“I had always hoped I might play a game for Devon and I was in the 13 but not the 12 for the Wiltshire game in the cup last Sunday,” said Bradley.
“If I am picked it will be great to play under my brother and with my Bovey team-mate Ryan Bougourd, who is new to the team this season.
“They are going to be hard acts to follow though as Chris won the Minor Counties title in his first game as captain – and Ryan took seven wickets against Wales two weeks ago on his debut.”
