Torquay Boys' Grammar School were crowned Devon Under 15 Cricket Champions this week. The team had beaten both Kings School Ottery and Okehampton in the previous rounds moving on to the Bovey Tracey showpiece.
In the semi-final they defeated a strong Exeter School side. Having been set a total of 90 to win in 15 overs it was nip and tuck all the way with the game going into the last over. Isaac Powell hit the winning boundary with 2 balls to spare in a well timed run chase. Ed Bragg and Tom Andrew set a wonderful foundation to see the boys home. Tom Andrew and Isaac Powell had been the pick of the bowlers in the Exeter innings.
In the final we came up against a buoyant Devonport High School for Boys from Plymouth. They had amassed an impressive 130 for 2 in their semi-final. Skipper Neal Osborn won an important toss and put them in to bat. Once again wickets fell regularly and there was some exceptionally tight bowling from Powell, Osborn and the ever impressive Andrew.
Restricting them to 76 was outstanding and the bowling had once again been backed up by equally impressive fielding. Unfortunately we lost Bragg early, but Andrew once again steadied the ship before dispatching two monstrous sixes to put the game beyond doubt. It fell upon Isaac Powell to again hit the winning runs, pulling the Devon quick bowler for four in a majestic manner.
Tom Andrew (right) deservedly received the man of the tournament trophy for his excellent efforts with both bat and ball and a catch to boot.
They go on to represent Devon now in the national competition playing Somerset champions Millfield in the next round.
