An End of an Era

One of Devon's most successful youth squads played their final game at Axminster. They defeated Wiltshire to retain the Southern Counties title. This year, due to three rain offs, despite being the only undefeated side in the competition they had to share the title with Cornwall who only lost one game to rain but were beaten at Torquay. Hopefully the county will not be accused of sneaking the title this year! This group had so many talented players - three of them toured the West Indies with the West  and played in the Bunbury - Yau, Cooke, and Fraser, Matt Allin is now playing at Edgbaston and James Fraser who played for England at under 15s and was considered to be one of the best bowlers of his type in the country. They reached the ECB Under 15 finals, won the IOW Festival, were the champions of their Under 17 division, unbeaten. The under 21s have been top or runners up in the Southern Counties for the past four years. This was an exceptional group of young men both on and off the field and they will be long remembered. The final game of any season is always a sad occasion but the last game with this group was particularly poignant. It was particularly good to welcome back Matt Cooke for the finale. Pictured above are stalwarts Jack Porter, who has superbly captained the side for the last two years, Ross Acton, Justin Yau and Matt Cooke. Also pictured is Andy Kingdon who has been a regular for the twenty-ones for the past three years and this was his last game.
