Umpires honour long-standing members

BRIXHAM-based umpire David Moseby was awarded the Tony Miller Cup at the annual meeting of the Devon Association of Cricket Officials.

The retired building society manager has been umpiring for nearly 20 years, although he still dons the pads occasionally to keep wicket for Devon Over60s 2nd XI.

Moseby (left) has been chairman of DACO and is currently South Devon area training officer for the organisation.

The cup remembers an umpire from west Devon who died in 2007 and is awarded for services to cricket.

Miller was associated with Hatherleigh and later Tavistock, where he combined umpiring with establishing a colts section.

A new trophy, the DACO Memorial Cup, was awarded to Torquay’s Roger Tolchard.

The former Leicestershire and England wicketkeeper-batsman started his cricket career as a schoolboy with Torquay and returned to the area when he retired from coaching at Malvern College in 2005.

Tolchard took to umpiring with enthusiasm on his return to South Devon and has been a regular on the Devon League and local cup scene since.

The Memorial Cup remembers umpires Gary Aldridge and Andy White, who died during 2014.

“The DACO Memorial Cup honours not only Gary Aldridge and Andy White, but all the officials who have left the crease and those who will leave the crease in the years to come,” said DACO chairman Gavin Lane.

Lane said Tolchard was a ‘unanimous’ choice for the award.

He added: “Whether umpiring at the top of the recreational game or locally for youth teams, Roger (pictured right) has shown both outstanding performance and outstanding contribution:

The award will be presented annually to the official who has performed outstandingly during the season and who has also made an outstanding contribution to cricket.

The final presentation of the evening was to award life membership of DACO to long-serving Ken Jeffrey.

Jeffrey, who played for Cockington as a young man, got involved in DACO through his current involvement with Torquay CC more than 15 years ago.

He has served two stints as DACO treasurer and is the appointments officer for the South Devon area.

The meeting and presentations took place at the Dolphin Hotel in Bovey Tracey.

Awards were handed out by Devon CCC president Roger Moylan-Jones, who fulfils the same role for DACO, and Nick Cousins from the ECB.

The business of the evening saw no major changes to officers, either local or county.

Paul Dawe from west Devon has replaced Martin Webb as DACO’s education officer.
