UMPIRING QUIZ
Question 1
A fielder positions himself so that his shadow falls across the pitch, where a slow bowler is pitching the ball. As the bowler runs in to deliver the ball the fielder doesn’t stay still – the shadow of his upper body moves from side to side. The batsman insists he’s a distraction and asks you to remove him.

A wicketkeeper, suffering from hay fever, sneezes very loudly just as the bowler releases his delivery, distracting the batsman, who is bowled.

Answer to Question 1
If you decide that the fielder is moving deliberately to distract the batsman, you can call ‘dead ball’, warn the fielding captain that it is illegal and that they’re liable to five penalty runs. The fielder’s shadow being on the pitch is not a problem, but if he is moving once the ball is delivered you have to take action. Instruct the captain to move the offender away.
Answer to Question 2
Not out. You react quickly: either umpire can immediately call, and signal, dead ball, because the striker was clearly distracted by the keeper sneezing, which caused him to be bowled. The ball will not count as one in the over.
Further Points on Umpiring Technique for you to think about:
· At both ends, do you look at your counter whilst the ball is still in play?
· At striker’s end, do you follow the ball off the bat too quickly – with risk of missing Hit Wicket?
· At both ends, do you conscientiously look for Short Runs?
· At bowlers end, do you watch where the batsmen are running when moving into position for a run out?
· Do you record young fast bowlers in such a way that you can be certain when they should start their second spell?
· At Striker’s end, do you watch for encroachment by the keeper?
