YOUNG cricketers from Exmouth Community College got to practice with the pros when they visited Edgbaston.

Every end-of-term for the past seven years, a party from the school has visited Warwickshire CCC’s home as part of activity week.

Former Budleigh Salterton summer pro Ant Botha helped set up the visits when he was playing for Warwickshire – and they have continued after he left the club.

Twelve lads aged between 12-16 signed up for the trip, which was led by Ian Taylor.

Taylor, who skippers Exmouth 2nd XI, has been on all the previous trips go Edgbaston and said this was the best yet.

“Normally there is a 1st team game on and we get to watch the game, look behind the scenes and chat with some of the players,” said Taylor.

“There was only a 2nd XI game on this time, which allowed the boys a bit more freedom.

“Laurie Evans, one of the Warwickshire players coming back from injury, let the lads bowl to him in the indoor net.

“He asked if they were cricketers – all the boys play for either Exmouth or Budleigh – and told the bowlers to mark out their run-ups properly as in a match.

“They must have had a good 40 minutes bowling at Laurie. He took it seriously and so did the boys.

“It must have done him some good as he scored 70 in a T20 the night after against Yorkshire.

“After the net Laurie chatted with the boys and talked about the importance of net practice.

“Laurie has scored First Class hundreds in the past and for him to take time to practice with our boys was a great experience for them.”

The college contingent also got the benefit of an unexpected question and answer session with former England batsman Jonathan Trott.

“He was at the ground doing some promotional work for a sponsor and when he finished I asked if we could grab some autographs and maybe some pictures,” said Taylor.

“He was brilliant. Not only did he sign autographs and pose for photos, he spent a good 45 minutes chatting with the lads about cricket.”
