DEVON Lions lacked the firepower to keep up with the asking rate as yesterday’s T20 challenge match against Oxford MCCU ended in a 42-run defeat.
The Lions – Devon’s development squad - did well to hold their First-Class opponents to 123 for four in The Parks.
But the Oxford bowlers were too miserly for Devon, who knew they were out of it at 58 for five with five overs to go and ended up well short on 81 for six.
A wicket each for Devon trio Matt Plowman, Ryan Bougourd and Nick Wakin had reduced the cricket scholars to 19 for three.
The key stand was of 99 between Lloyd Paternott and Sam Westaway, which pushed the score up to 118 for four.
Paternott, who has had time at the Essex Academy, made 61 off 52 balls.
Westaway made an unbeaten 40 from 37 balls.
The stand end in the penultimate over when skipper Gary Chappell has Paternott caught swinging.
Devon made a tidy slow though openers Peter Bradley and Ross Acton who made a 36-run dent in the target.
Part of the problem was an accurate spell of three overs for 12 runs from pacer Charlie Morris, who is dual-registered with Devon and will reappear once the MCCU season ends in mid-summer.
Acton went first, bowler out by Aussie all-rounder Dan Pascoe for 19, which turned out to be Devon’s top score.
Three runs later Bradley fell for 14 to the same bowler having a swing and from them on it became a struggle.
Matt Golding hit two boundaries before Pascoe bowled him to leave Devon 52 for three.
Then Somerset 2nd XI spinner Charlie Walker took three in a row – Luke Bess, Chappell and Jack Dart as Devon dipped to 68 for six.
Max Curtis (5no) and Cameron Grainger (8no) batted out time.
Oxford MCCU 123-4 (L Patertnott 61, S A Westaway 40no), Devon Lions 81-6 (D C Pascoe 3-12, C A M Walker 3-15). Oxford bt Devon by 42 runs.
