Yelverton glad to be back in C Division
YELVERTON captain Richard Goldsby-West is making no rash predictions about the season ahead for last season’s D Division champions.

You have to go way back to 2002 for the last time Yelverton were as high as the C Division – an unhappy season which ended with just two wins.

It was a real low point for the Langton Park outfit, who were founder members of the league when it was formed in 1972.

There was a time when Yelverton played in the B Division – that was way back in 1987 – and there is no rush to get back there just yet.

Goldsby-West said other sides who had passed through the C Division in a hurry generally had some help.

‘The sides who have come up and kept going generally have an overseas player and we don’t,’ said Goldsby-West.

‘Looking around the division it seems we are one of the few clubs who don’t have an overseas this year.

‘Having said that, I think we will do fine. The jump between the D and C Division isn’t that massive.

‘What you do find is that teams generally have 11 players all contributing with bat or ball, not the same bloke opening the batting and bowling!

‘The reason we won the D Division was that we didn’t have anyone making up the numbers and that should equip us well for the next step.’

Yelverton have picked up former Ottery St Mary batsman Richard Townsend, who has moved into the area, and keeper Mack Bickham, who is studying at Marjons.

The 1st XI squad is largely unchanged, however opening bowler Ian Cunningham is out for the season due to injury.
